Planar Magnetics

Developed by ECI in the early 1980s, planar magnetics uses a flat conductor such as PCB instead of round magnet wire, thus reducing the overall profile of the component.

Typical applications for planar magnetics technology include flyback topologies for lower power applications and half bridge or forward converters for higher power applications. Any manufacturer who uses switching power magnetics and would benefit from a low-profile component or from a more repeatable magnetic component, would also be able to take advantage of planar magnetic technology.
